GCVI seniors, St. James juniors advance to volleyball finals

GUELPH – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels qualified for the District 10 high school senior girls’ volleyball final when they swept the Centennial Spartans 3-0 at GCVI Wednesday.

While it was a sweep for the Gaels, it wasn’t a runaway win as the Spartans kept them honest and within sight throughout.

The Gaels won 25-22, 25-20, 27-25.

GCVI had finished the regular season in second place at 12-2 while Centennial was third at 11-3. The teams split their regular-season meetings as the Gaels won 3-1 at Centennial Dec. 8 and the Spartans won 3-2 at GCVI Jan. 17.

St. James Lions finished first at 13-1 while the Ross Royals were fourth at 8-6. They’re to meet in the other semifinal that has been postponed until Tuesday at 9:30 a.m. at St. James, first due to the lockdown at Ross Wednesday and then the freezing rain on Friday.

GCVI is to play the St. James-Ross winner in the D10 final that is scheduled for Tuesday at 8 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre.

 

Junior Girls’ Volleyball

The St. James Lions advanced to the D10 junior final by sweeping the Bishop Macdonell Celtics 3-0 in a semifinal Wednesday.

The Lions had finished the regular season in second place at 12-2 while Bishop Mac was fourth at 7-7.

The other semifinal between the Ross Royals and Centennial Spartans is to be played Tuesday at 10 a.m. It was postponed Wednesday due to the lockdown at Ross and then postponed again Friday after the cancellation of buses due to freezing rain.

Ross finished first at 13-1 while Centennial was sixth at 5-9.

The winner of Tuesday morning’s game is to advance to the junior final slated for 6 p.m. Tuesday at the GGAC.
