GCVI’s win gives Gaels home game in senior hoops quarter-finals
GUELPH – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels secured a home game in the District 10 high school senior boys’ basketball league’s quarter-finals with a 61-31 victory over the Bishop Macdonell Celtics Thursday, the final day of the league’s regular season.
That win combined with a loss by the St. James Lions to the Ross Royals allowed the Gaels to claim fourth place in the final standings.
GCVI finished at 7-7 while fifth-place St. James finished at 6-8. The two will meet in the quarter-finals at GCVI Thursday.
This year’s playoffs are not the usual one-week hectic schedule. Teams have a week to prepare for the quarter-finals and the quarter-final winners will get a week to prepare for the semifinals.
The championship game is set for Feb. 22 at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre. Game time is 8 p.m.
Rylan Ninaber had 18 points for GCVI in the win over Bishop Mac.
Matt MacEachern responded with 15 for Bishop Mac.
Thursday’s other quarter-finals have first-place Centennial Spartans (14-0) hosting the eighth-place Centre Wellington Falcons (2-12), seventh-place Bishop Mac (3-11) playing the second-place Ross Royals (11-3) at Ross and the third-place Lourdes Crusaders (10-4) hosting the sixth-place Orangeville Bears (3-11).
Game time for each of the quarter-final games is 4 p.m.
Centennial 83 Lourdes 64
Centennial completed an undefeated regular season with the win.
Cameron Powell had 28 points for Centennial while Jackson Wallace added 24 and Kai Clarke and Sebastian Harman-den Hoed each had 10.
Sebastian Porcellato had 19 for Lourdes and was followed by Tyler Blais with 15 and Kevin Martinez and Hunter Power-Rossi with nine apiece.
Ross 75 St. James 39
Cole Miller connected for 29 points for Ross while Ryan Kielar added 11.
David Farrelly had 18 for St. James and Michael Fonte chipped in with nine.
Orangeville 61 Centre Wellington 54
Keelan Steele struck for 15 points for Orangeville and junior call-up Ewan Steele netted 14.
Kelsi Mallany had 16 for Centre Wellington and Johnny Barclay contributed 12.
Ross Royals clinched a first-place finish with a win over the St. James Lions on the final day of the regular season.
The Royals finished atop the standings at 13-1 and were followed by the Orangeville Bears at 12-2, Centennial Spartans at 11-3, Lourdes Crusaders at 7-7, Centre Wellington Falcons at 6-8, Bishop Macdonell Celtics at 3-11 and Guelph CVI Green Gaels and St. James both at 2-12.
Ross is to host St. James in Thursday’s quarter-finals while GCVI is to play at Orangeville, Bishop Mac is to play at Centennial and Centre Wellington is to play at Lourdes.
The game at Orangeville is to start at 4 p.m. while the other three are to begin at 5:30 p.m.
Semifinals are set for Feb. 20 while the championship game is to go Feb. 22 at 6 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.

Daniel Wang had 17 points for the Royals while Lloyd Brown added 13 and Liam Nippard had 11.
Leading scorers for St. James were not available.

Ewan Steele hit for 22 points for Orangeville.
Benny Miller had 13 for Centre Wellington.
