Girls’ rugby quarter-final playoff pairings decided

FERGUS – Pairings for the District 4/10 high school girls’ rugby quarter-finals are set following the league’s final regular-season match Tuesday.

The Guelph CVI Green Gaels defeated the Centre Wellington Falcons 27-5 to wrap up the regular season.

The Gaels scored five tries in the match while the host Falcons had one.

Individual scorers were not reported.

The result left GCVI in second place in Pool B at 2-1-0 and Centre Wellington fourth at 0-3-0. Erin Raiders finished first at 3-0-0 and Bishop Macdonell Celtics were third at 1-2-0.

Pool A finished its regular season Monday. Ross Royals were first at 3-0-0 and were followed by the Centre Dufferin Royals at 2-1-0, Orangeville Bears at 1-2-0 and Centennial Spartans at 0-3-0.

The quarter-finals are crossover matches with first place in one pool hosting the fourth-place team in the other pool and the second-place team hosting the other pool’s third-place team.

The playoffs are to kick off Wednesday with Bishop Mac playing the defending champion Centre Dufferin Royals in Shelburne Wednesday at 2:30 p.m.

The other three games are to go Thursday with GCVI playing Orangeville at Varsity Field at 2:30 p.m., Centre Wellington playing at Ross at 3 p.m. and Erin hosting Centennial at Erin Public School at 4 p.m.

The Royals posted their third consecutive shutout victory with the win over the Raiders.

Liam Thornton had two tries and a convert while Charlie Thurtell also had 10 points on five conversions. Getting one try apiece were Will Elliott, Drew McQueen, Evan Geensen, L. Van Dam, Jacob Parkes, Ely Sutton, Mason Stafford, Kona Kim and Ryan Auger.

 

Junior Boys’ Rugby

Centre Dufferin 30 Centre Wellington 7

Scoring single tries for Centre Dufferin were Carsten Schlums, Kabir Basra, Ethan Gardner, Mason Priest,Jake Henry and Lucas Carson-Pedri.

Isaac Turner had the try for Centre Wellington while Cameron Hodgson converted it.

Leading scorers reported for Ross were Nate with three tries, Cohen B. with 10 points, Ewan with a try and a convert and Adam, Charles, Cameron and Will each with a try.
