GMHA Junior Gryphons busy in holiday tournaments
GUELPH – Several of Guelph Minor Hockey Association’s Junior Gryphons rep teams will be busy competing in tournaments during the holidays.
The minor midget AAA and minor bantam AAA squads are to compete in the Toronto Marlboros International Holiday Classic at various arenas in Toronto while the minor bantam A and minor peewee AA teams are to participate in the Richard Bell Memorial Tournament in Oakville. The novice A squad is to be in Brampton for the International Silver Stick tournament and the novice select team is to play in the Hespeler Olympics tournament.
All of those tournaments are four-day affairs that are to start Thursday.
Four other teams are to compete in three-day tournaments that are to start Friday. They’re the bantam selects in the Ray Hunt Memorial Classic RS/MD Tournament in Orangeville, the minor peewee AE team in the Buffalo River Outdoor Classic Tournament Series, the minor atom AA team in the Bell Capital Cup in Ottawa and the novice AE team in the Vic Teal Tournament in St. Catharines.
The Junior Gryphons are one of 60 teams in the Toronto Marlboros International Holiday Classic’s minor midget AAA tournament. They’re in a pool with the Brantford 99ers, Buffalo Regals, Markham Majors and Peterborough Petes and are to play Buffalo and Peterborough Thursday, Brantford Friday and Markham Saturday. At the completion of pool play, the teams will be ranked in one of two 30-team divisions and the top eight in each division advance to the tournament’s playoffs.
That tournament’s minor bantam AAA section is a 20-team affair and the Junior Gryphs are in a pool with the Burlington Eagles, Chicago Fury, Kitchener Junior Rangers and Vaughan Kings for the preliminary pool play. The locals are to play Burlington and Vaughan Thursday, Chicago Friday and Kitchener Saturday. Top eight overall gain berths in the playoff round.
In the Richard Bell Memorial Tournament at Oakville, Guelph’s minor bantam A team is in a pool with the Burlington Eagles, Welland Tigers and Oakville Rangers Blue and AE teams in the 10-team category. They’re to play Burlington and Oakville AE Friday and Oakville Blue and Welland Saturday. Top six in the overall standings advance to the playoff round.
That tournament’s minor peewee AA category has a total of 16 teams with the Junior Gryphs in a pool with the Brampton 45’s, Streetsville Tigers and Tecumseh Eagles for the preliminary round. Top eight qualify for the playoff round.
The Junior Gryphs are one of eight teams in the novice A category of the International Silver Stick regional tournament in Brampton. They’re in a pool with the Centre Wellington Fusion, Markham Waxers and Richmond Hill Stars and are to play Richmond Hill and Markham Thursday and Centre Wellington Friday. The Fusion is also to play Markham and Richmond Hill Thursday and Guelph Friday. Top two in each pool move on to the category’s playoffs.
The novice select category of the Hespeler Olympics tournament features five teams with the Junior Gryphs being joined by the Brantford 99ers, Caledon Hawks, Innisfil Winterhawks and Markham Waxers. The Junior Gryphs are to play Brantford and Innisfil Thursday and Markham and Caledon Friday. Top two in the division are to meet in Saturday’s final.
The Junior Gryphs bantam selects are to be joined by the Acton Chargers, Centre Wellington Fusion, Halton Hills, Orangeville Flyers and TNT in the Ray Hunt Memorial Classic Tournament at Orangeville. The Junior Gryphs are to play Orangeville and Acton Friday and Centre Wellington Saturday in the preliminary round. Top four advance to Sunday’s playoff round.
At the Bell Capital Cup in Ottawa, the Junior Gryphons minor atom AA team are to play the Ottawa Sting and Eastern Ontario Cobras Friday and Gloucester Rangers and Ottawa Valley Silver Seven Saturday. Sunday’s playoff round is to feature the top four in the category.
The Junior Gryphons novice AE team is in the Vic Teal Tournament in St. Catharines with the Erindale Spitfires, Newcastle Stars, Niagara-on-the-Lake Wolves, West Lincoln Wrath and Woolwich Wildcats. The Junior Gryphs are to play Woolwich and Newcastle Friday and West Lincoln and Niagara-on-the-Lake Saturday. Top two gain berths in Sunday’s championship game.
