Goal late in second is downfall for Shamrocks
HAGERSVILLE – The Hespeler Shamrocks surrendered a goal in the final minute of the second period and it turned out to be the game-winner as the Shamrocks were edged 4-3 by the Hagersville Hawks in Provincial Junior Hockey League play Saturday at the Hagersville arena.
The Shamrocks never led in the game and trailed 2-1 at the end of the first period while all scoring in the game was complete by the end of the second, the final goal coming with 47 seconds to go in that period.
Kyle Wagner had a pair of power-play goals for Hespeler while Dylan Beitz scored the other goal. Austin Reilly collected two assists and Brett Hartin had one.
Peter Cappucci, Connor Stirling, Ben Huffman and Ralph Taggart had a goal apiece for Hagersville. Tycie Cowan assisted on three of the goals while single assists were awarded to Jayden Lammel, Wesley Fritz and Connor Spence.
Hagersville outshot the Shamrocks 31-27 and went 1-for-2 on its power play while Hespeler went 2-for-3.
Max Parrott was tagged with the loss in the Hespeler net. He had 27 saves while winning netminder Avery Hartwick had 24 saves for Hagersville.
The loss leaves the Shamrocks at 3-4-0-0 while the win keeps Hagersville undefeated at 7-0-0-1.
The Shamrocks are to play another undefeated team Sunday when they’re to host the Grimsby Peach Kings (6-0-0-0) at the Hespeler Memorial Arena. Game time is 3:30 p.m.
After playing four consecutive games on the road and six of their first seven games of the season away from Hespeler, Sunday’s game is to be the first of four consecutive home games for the Shamrocks.
