Goal late in third sinks Mapleton-Minto 81’s

SHELBURNE – Luke Richardson’s goal with 1:25 to go in the third period lifted the Shelburne Muskies to a 6-5 victory over the Mapleton-Minto 81’s in WOAA senior men’s hockey play Saturday night at the Centre Dufferin Recreation Complex.

The game was a closely-fought contest throughout. The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period and Shelburne led 4-3 after the second thanks to a pair of goals 31 seconds apart with less than four minutes to go in the period.

The Muskies went ahead by two, the largest lead by either team in the game, early in the third before the 81’s tied it with a pair of goals in 57 seconds in the final four minutes to set the stage for Richardson’s winner.

Devin Williams, Brody Lemay, Adam Kawalec, Tommy Hoogaars and Ben Morris scored the goals for the 81’s.

Nick Hodgson, Ryan Hunter, Stephan Scholug, Jackson Seeley, Andrew Whalen and Richardson each had a goal for Shelburne.

The loss was the first in regulation time for the 81’s this season.

M-M is third in the 14-team league at 6-1-1-1 while Shelburne is seventh at 5-3-0-0.

The 81’s are to play the Petrolia Squires (6-3-1-0) at Petrolia’s Greenwood Recreation Centre Friday at 8:30 p.m.
