Goalie plays out and scores, but Rocks dropped by Thunder

TILLSONBURG – The Elora Rocks completed their regular season in the Western Ontario Athletic Association’s senior men’s hockey league Saturday night as they were dropped 9-5 by the Tillsonburg Thunder at the Tillsonburg Memorial arena.

The Rocks had 11 players suited up for the game including goaltenders Austin Hoegy and Craig Byford. Hoegy played in net and Byford played out and had a goal and an assist in the game.

Tillsonburg had 20 dressed for the game and the Thunder led 3-1 at the end of the first period and 7-3 after the second. Tillsonburg outshot the Rocks 50-35.

Spencer Gourlay scored twice for Elora while Brett Coverdale and Sam Bilton tallied oce apiece. Mark Rozak and Justin Byers each had two assists while single assists were awarded to Gourlay, Cole Rooney, Coverdale and Corey Flemington.

Chris McGuffin had a hat trick for Tillsonburg while Scott Stafford added a pair of goals and Mike Findley, Kaine Geldart, Justin Lightfoot and Jeff Leaist also scored. Brett Parsons collected four assists while Ryan Stephenson and Travis Lisabeth had each, Andrew Tapsell had two and Findlay, Jason Skinner, Geldart, Leaist and Stafford each had one.

Hoegy had 41 saves in the Elora net while Tommy Lee had 30 for Tillsonburg.

The Rocks finished the regular season 10th at 8-13-0-1 while Tillsonburg finished sixth at 13-7-0-2.

Top eight advance to the AA playoffs while the bottom six advance to the A playoffs.

The Rocks will be in the A playoffs and get a bye in the best-of-three quarter-finals.
