Gogolev powers Storm to another win over Hamilton
HAMILTON – Pavel Gogolev’s unassisted goal after just less than two minutes of play in overtime gave the Guelph Storm a 4-3 victory over the Hamilton Bulldogs in Ontario Hockey League play Saturday at Hamilton’s FirstOntario Centre.
It was the Storm’s second win over Hamilton in as many days and Guelph’s fifth consecutive win, tying their season high. The Storm had won five in a row from Sept. 28 to Oct. 12.
Gogolev’s goal, his third in four games with the Storm after being traded from the Peterborough Petes earlier this month, gave Guelph the win in a game it led 2-0 seven minutes in.
Guelph led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second game, but a goal by Hamilton’s Liam Stevens tied the score 3-3 at 1:45 of the third and eventually forced the OT.
The winning goal completed a big game for Gogolev who had assisted on each of the Storm’s three goals in regulation time. Those goals were scored by Barret Kirwin, Nate Schnarr and Alexey Toropchenko while Cedric Ralph, Liam Hawel and Owen Lalonde each had one assist.
Isaac Nurse and Zachary Jackson scored the other goals for Hamilton while assists were awarded to Brandon Saigeon, Conor Ali, Stevens, Nicolas Mattinen, Navrin Mutter and Jake Gravelle.
The Storm outshot Hamilton 38-36 and went 2-for-5 on their power play while the Bulldogs were scoreless on three power plays.
Anthony Popovich made 33 saves to get the win in the Guelph net while Zachary Roy had 34 saves, but took the loss in the Hamilton net.
The win leaves the Storm at 19-9-3-4 and Hamilton falls to 15-18-3-0.
Next game for the Storm is Wednesday when they’re to play the Owen Sound Attack (19-13-1-2) at Owen Sound’s Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre. Game time is 7 p.m.
