Gogolev powers Storm to win over Owen Sound
OWEN SOUND – Pavel Gogolev reached the 20-goal level for the season as he scored all four goals as the Guelph Storm edged the Owen Sound Attack 4-3 in Ontario Hockey League play Tuesday night at the Harry Lumley Bayshore Community Centre.
Gogolev gave the Storm a 2-0 lead by the end of the first period and they were up 3-2 at the end of the second.
Cam Hillis assisted on three of the goals while Josh Wainman and Keegan Stevenson each had one assist.
Griffin Wilson, Brady Lyle and former Storm Barret Kirwin had a goal apiece for Owen Sound. Single assists were awarded to Ethan Burroughs, Matthew Struthers, Adam McMaster, Sergey Popov and Lyle.
The Storm were outshot 33-31 thanks to Owen Sound’s 13-5 advantage in the third period. The Guelph side was also scoreless on two power plays while Owen Sound went 1-for-3.
Owen Bennett picked up the win in the Guelph net with 30 saves while Mack Guzda took the loss for Owen Sound with 27 saves.
The win pushes the Storm back to top spot in both the Midwest Division and Western Conference at 18-6-1-3. They’re two points up on the London Knights (18-8-1-1) in both. Owen Sound (13-11-3-2) is fourth in the division and eighth in the conference.
The Storm have a three-in-three this weekend as they’re to host the Windsor Spitfires (16-6-3-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Sleeman Centre and the Kitchener Rangers (14-10-2-2) Saturday at 2 p.m. and play the Oshawa Generals (16-9-0-2) at Oshawa’s Tribute Communities Centre Sunday at 6:05 p.m.
Sunday’s game is the final one before a 13-day break for the Christmas holidays. They’ll be busy when they return as they are scheduled to have a stretch of three games in four days followed by another three-in-three weekend.
