Gonzaga Bulldogs grab tournament crown in Guelph
GUELPH – The Gonzaga Bulldogs are tournament champions, but not those Gonzaga Bulldogs and not that tournament.
The Gonzaga Bulldogs of Mississauga captured the championship of the Lourdes Crusaders high school junior boys’ hockey tournament Tuesday at the Gryphon Centre.
Gonzaga defeated the St. David Celtics of Waterloo 4-2 in the final. The Bulldogs scored the only goal of the first period before the teams scored a goal apiece in the second.
The Ross Royals claimed the consolation final, the tournament’s bronze-medal game, with a 3-0 blanking of the Sacred Heart Crusaders of Walkerton. The Royals opened the scoring midway through the second period before adding their other two goals early in third period, 1:33 apart.
The championship-game combatants had finished first in their respective pools while the consolation-final participants had finished second in their pools. The games completed the two-day, 10-team tournament.
Competing in the Dupuis Division, Gonzaga had three wins and a loss as the Bulldogs defeated Centennial Spartans 3-0, St. Mike’s 2-1 and Wellington Heights 3-2 and lost 3-2 to Ross.
The Royals doubled Wellington Heights 4-2, tied St. Mike’s 4-4 and lost 4-3 to Centennial.
The Spartans edged Wellington Heights 4-3 and lost 5-2 to St. Mike’s who were nipped 2-1 by Wellington Heights.
In the Jake Division, St. David downed the Lourdes Crusaders 3-0, St. James Lions 6-1 and Centre Dufferin Royals 5-3 and lost 2-0 to Sacred Heart.
Sacred Heart defeated St. James 5-2 and Centre Dufferin 5-0 and lost 4-2 to Lourdes.
Lourdes had a pair of ties as they battled St. James to a 1-1 standoff and Centre Dufferin to a 2-2 deadlock.
St. James lost 2-1 to Centre Dufferin.
