Grand River Gargoyles crushed by Kangaroos

GUELPH – The Grand River Gargoyles were handed a 142-34 setback by the Etobicoke Kangaroos in AFL Ontario play Saturday at Margaret Greene Park.

Etobicoke jumped ahead early as the Kangaroos were up 33-9 after the first quarter, 61-15 at halftime and 97-27 after the third quarter.

Sam Skelhorn had three goals for the Gargs while Sam Wood had two.

Justin Harris hit for nine goals for Etobicoke while Justin Moore added four. Brandon Bentley scored three and Joe Tenuta had two and Callum Norrish, Mark Ferguson and Nicholas Brill collected one apiece.

The loss drops the Gargs to sixth in the nine-team league at 1-3-0 and a 68.56 percentage. Etobicoke is second at 5-0-0 and 357.99 percentage. Ottawa Swans lead at 5-0-0 and 535.79 percentage while the Toronto Eagles are third at 4-0-0 and 331.20 percentage.

The percentage number takes into account points for and against. A 100 percentage would have a team scoring the same number of points as it gives up. Any percentage above 100 means a team scores more points than it gives up while a percentage below 100 means a team yields more points than it scores.

The Gargs fell below 100 with the loss as they have scored 205 points this season and given up 299.

The league takes the Canada Day weekend off. Next games in the league are July 6 and 7 and all are to be played at Humber College. The Gargs are to play the Toronto Eagles July 7 at 5 p.m.
