Green Gaels and Bears to battle for third-place finish

GUELPH – Heading into the final game of the District 10 high school girls’ soccer’s regular season, the four teams that have secured home games for the quarter-finals have been set.

Top four host those first-round playoff games Thursday. However, Guelph CVI Green Gaels and Orangeville Bears don’t know who they’ll face as they don’t know which one will finish third and which one will finish fourth.

The Gaels and Bears are to play Wednesday in a make-up game for one postponed last week.

They enter the game with identical 3-2-1 records, records that remained the same as both posted wins Tuesday. GCVI blanked the Lourdes Crusaders 2-0 at the Gryphon Soccer Complex while Orangeville defeated the Centre Wellington Falcons 3-1 in Orangeville.

Guelph CVI 2 Lourdes 0

Maddy Purdy scored both goals for the Gaels, the first one coming a few minutes into the game and the second one coming a few minutes from the end of the match.

Bishop Macdonell 0 Ross 0

The tie is the first blemish on Ross’s record as the Royals finish atop the league at 6-0-1. Bishop Mac is sixth at 1-3-3.

Orangeville 3 Centre Wellington 1

Pherson had a pair of goals for Orangeville while Mugford scored the other one.

Hogenhout had the lone goal for Centre Wellington.

St. James 4 Centennial 3

St. James finished as the highest-scoring team in the regular season as the four goals by the Lions gave them 25 for the season. Centennial is second in that category with 14 while GCVI has 12.

Arulampalam netted a pair of goals for St. James while Lawson and Garbuio also scored.

Capeto, Goodchild and Grant had a goal apiece for Centennial.
