Green Gaels skate into girls hockey semifinals

GUELPH CVI – The Guelph CVI Green Gaels survived a short bench to edge the Lourdes Crusaders 2-0 in District 10 high school girls’ hockey quarter-final play Thursday at Exhibition arena.

The Gaels scored once in the first period and added their other goal in the second.

GCVI played the game with two substitutes on the bench while Lourdes had twice as many.

Scoring and shutout details were not reported.

The Gaels advance to play the first-place Centre Wellington Falcons in the semifinals. That game is scheduled to go Wednesday at 2 p.m. at the Centre Wellington Sportsplex in Fergus.

Centre Wellington had finished the regular season a perfect 10-0-0 while Ross Royals were second at 8-2-0, Centennial Spartans third at 5-5-0, Lourdes fourth at 4-6-0, GCVI fifth at 3-7-0 and St. James Lions sixth at 0-10-0.

St. James forfeited the game to give Centennial a berth in the semifinals.

The Spartans are to play Ross at the Victoria Road arena Wednesday at 3:30 p.m.
