Gryphon baseball men ousted from regional semifinals
NIAGARA FALLS – The Guelph Gryphons’ stay in the OUA baseball league’s Regional Qualifier A came to an end Sunday morning at Oakes Park Stadium.
The Gryphs, who had split their games in Saturday’s round-robin play, were ousted following a 10-8 loss to the McMaster Marauders.
McMaster, winless Saturday, went on to drop the Brock Badgers 9-4 to claim the region’s berth in next weekend’s championship tournament at Ajax.
The Marauders will be joined in the Final Four by the Western Mustangs, Carleton Ravens and Toronto Varsity Blues.
Western won the Regional Qualifier B final 8-5 over the Waterloo Warriors at Waterloo’s Bechtel Park. The Mustangs gained their berth in the final with a 7-3 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks while the Warriors toppled the Windsor Lancers 7-2 in the other semifinals.
Carleton claimed the Regional Qualifier C honours with a 7-1 win over the Queen’s Gaels in the final. Queen’s had downed the Ottawa Gee-Gees 10-2 in the semifinal.
Toronto took the Regional Qualifier D title with a 13-3 win over the Ryerson Rams. The region had finished its round-robin segment earlier Sunday with Toronto topping the York Lions 14-4 and Ryerson slipping by the Laurentian Voyageurs 8-6. Toronto finished the round-robin at 3-0 while Ryerson was at 2-1, Laurentian at 1-2 and York at 0-3.
