Gryphon baseball men split qualifier matches

NIAGARA FALLS – The Guelph Gryphons split a pair of games Saturday in the regulation round of OUA baseball’s Regional Qualifier A at Oakes Park Stadium.

The Gryphs opened with a 12-0 win over the McMaster Marauders before being edged 5-4 by the Brock Badgers.

Brock defeated McMaster 4-1 in the other match.

Saturday’s game served as the seeding for Sunday’s playoff round.

The Gryphs and McMaster are to meet in a semifinal at 10 a.m. with the winner advancing to play Brock in the final at 1:30 p.m.

Tournament champion is to advance to the league’s Final Four tournament hosted by the Regional Qualifier D champion at Ajax next weekend.

In Regional Qualifier C Saturday, the Carleton Ravens edged the Ottawa Gee-Gees 5-4 and dropped the Queen’s Gaels 10-1 while Ottawa defeated Queen’s 6-1. Queen’s and Ottawa are to meet in Sunday’s semifinal with the winner getting to play Carleton in the regional final.

In Regional Qualifier D, Toronto Varsity Blues defeated Laurentian Voyageurs 12-4 and Ryerson Rams 16-1 while York Lions fell 12-9 to Ryerson and 5-3 to Laurentian. Round-robin play is to continue Sunday with Toronto playing York in one game and Ryerson battling Laurentian in another. Toronto is to play the winner of the Ryerson-Laurentian game in the regional final.

Play in Regional Qualifier B Saturday was cancelled due to field conditions at Kitchener’s Jack Couch Stadium and Waterloo’s Bechtel Park. Play in the tournament Sunday will be strictly playoffs with a pair of seven-inning semifinals with the winners advancing to a championship match that will be nine innings in duration if possible.

Time and location of the games will be determined by the playability of the two fields. Seeding for Sunday’s games was decided by the results of the teams during the previous OUA championship tournament. That was in 2019 as university sports were cancelled last year due to the pandemic.

Western Mustangs are to play the Laurier Golden Hawks in one semifinal while the Waterloo Warriors and Windsor Lancers are to battle in the other. Winners move on to the regional final.
