Gryphon baseball men split twinbill with Waterloo

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons split their doubleheader with the Waterloo Warriors in OUA baseball play at Hastings Stadium Sunday.

The Gryphs took the opening nine-inning match 12-9, but fell 7-5 in the second seven-inning game.

Saturday at Jack Coach Park in Kitchener, the Gryphs trailed 4-2 after seven innings in the opening game when rain put a halt to things.

The Gryphs had split their opening-weekend games a week earlier, losing 8-5 and 9-8 to the Laurier Golden Hawks at Jack Couch Park in the opening doubleheader of the weekend before posting 4-3 and 5-2 victories at Hastings Stadium the following day.

The Gryphs are to complete their regular season this week with doubleheaders against the Western Mustangs. They’re to play at Hastings Stadium Saturday with games at 12 p.m. and 3:30 p.m. and then travel to London for Sunday’s doubleheader.

The Gryphs, Laurier, Waterloo and Western are to gather at Jack Couch Park and Bechtel Field in Waterloo for Regional Qualifier B Oct. 9 and 10.

Qualifier champion is to advance to the four-team OUA championship tournament the following weekend. It’s to be held either in Toronto or Sudbury depending on which team wins Regional Qualifier D. Teams in that tournament are to be the Laurentian Voyageurs of Sudbury and the three Toronto squads – Ryerson Rams, Toronto Varsity Blues and York Lions.
