Gryphon baseball men swept by Toronto

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons dropped an OUA baseball doubleheader to the Toronto Varsity Blues Saturday at Hastings Stadium as they were handed 4-1 and 8-5 setbacks.

The Gryphs were held to three hits and committed six errors in the opening game.

The Varsity Blues struck for a single run in the first inning and added three more in the fourth while Guelph’s run came in the ninth.

Mateos Kekatos picked up the win for Toronto as he kept the Gryphs scoreless in his eight innings of work. He had 10 strikeouts and yielded two hits and a walk. Luca Lombardi pitched the ninth in relief and gave up the run and a hit.

Royhey Suzuki hit a solo homer for the Varsity Blues and Joe Woods hit two singles.

Toronto broke a 4-4 tie in the nightcap with four runs in the sixth inning.

Guelph had opened the scoring with a single run in the first inning and Toronto got that one back in the fourth. The teams scored three runs apiece in the fifth.

Alex Tabascio started on the mound for the Varsity Blues while Andrew Greig picked up the win in relief. He came in during the fifth inning. The pair combined to allow four runs, one earned, off five hits and four walks in six innings. Tabascio had a strikeout.

Suzuki hit a double and two singles while Woods drove in three runs with two singles.

Gryphon details were not reported.

The results leave the Gryphons at 6-4 while Toronto is at a league-best 7-1.

The Gryphs are to host the Queen’s Gaels (6-2) in a doubleheader at Hastings Stadium Sunday. First game is to start at 12 p.m.
