Gryphon basketball men dropped by Queen’s

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their fifth consecutive loss to start the OUA men’s basketball league as they were downed 83-64 by the Queen’s Gaels Friday night at the Queen’s ARC Gymnasium.

The Gryphs fell behind by 10 early as they trailed 24-14 at the end of the opening quarter. Queen’s was ahead 41-33 at halftime before they stretched the advantage to 67-47 at the end of the third quarter.

Craig Valeriote led the Gryphs with 18 points while Malcolm Glanville had 11 and Tommy Yanchus netted 10. Rasheed Weekes grabbed five rebounds while J.L. Nwosu had three steals and Glanville had four assists.

Jesse Graham hit for 22 points for Queen’s while Quinton Gray had 21, Matt Elcock 13 and Jaz Bains 10. Swann Fargeau-Faucon had 10 rebounds, Graham had five assists and Connor Keefe and Landon Brickenden each had three blocks.

The Gryphs shot 35 per cent from the field and 47 per cent on free throws while Queen’s hit 52 per cent from the field and 62 per cent on free throws.

The loss was the fifth in as many league outings for the Gryphs who are to complete their stretch of five consecutive road games Saturday at 8 p.m. against the York Lions (2-2).

After that they’ll have six consecutive home games at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre starting with a Friday match against the Nipissing Lakers (1-3). Game time is 8 p.m.
