Gryphon basketball men rally to top Waterloo

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons rebounded from an eight-point deficit midway through the third quarter to score a 79-69 victory over the Waterloo Warriors in OUA men’s basketball play Saturday at Waterloo’s Physical Activities Complex.

The Gryphs trailed 49-41 at the midpoint of the third quarter before going on a 16-2 run to grab a lead they wouldn’t relinquish the rest of the way.

Tommy Yanchus sank six three-pointers on his way to a 29-point outing. Keenan Dowell added 17 and Malcolm Glanville had 10. Dowell had nine rebounds, three steals and three blocks and Aaron Nugent had four assists and three steals.

Nedim Hodzic hit for 25 points for Waterloo while Jayden Grewal had 24 and David Ramon Prados added 12. Hodzic had 13 rebounds and two steals while Grewal had three assists and three blocks.

The Gryphs are fourth in the West Division at 5-7 while Waterloo is fifth at 3-10. Windsor Lancers (6-6) and Laurier Golden Hawks (6-8) are tied for second.

The Gryphs are to host Laurier Wednesday at 8 p.m. at the Guelph Gryphons Athletic Centre.
