Gryphon basketball women drop Laurier

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons made it four consecutive wins in OUA women’s basketball play Sunday when they topped the Laurier Golden Hawks 74-56 at Waterloo’s Manulife Sportsplex at RIM Park.

Guelph climbed into a tie with the Western Mustangs for fourth place in the West Division with identical 12-10 records. Those two teams will finish either fourth or fifth and will meet in the divisional quarter-finals.

The Gryphs never trailed in the game and the score was tied once – at 2-2 when the match was 29 seconds old. Haley Belyk hit a three-pointer 35 seconds later to put the Gryphs ahead for good.

Guelph led 25-16 at the end of the first quarter, 43-28 at halftime and 54-46 at the end of the third quarter.

Ashley Wheeler led the Gryphs with 16 points while Sarah Holmes had 13, Ivana Vujadinovic 12, Burke Bechard nine and Julia Kokonis eight. Holmes grabbed 16 rebounds and Bechard had eight while Holmes also had five assists and two steals and Wheeler had four blocks.

Nicole Morrison netted 14 points for Laurier while Sarah Dillon had 10 and Tayania Siwek-Smith added eight. Lauren Jamieson hauled down seven rebounds while Morrison had seven assists.

The Gryphs have a pair of games left on their regular season, both at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Centre, as they’re to host the Waterloo Warriors (2-20) Wednesday at 6 p.m. and Western Saturday at 1 p.m. in a game that could decide who gets to play the divisional quarter-final at home.
