Gryphon basketball women hold on to top Algoma

SAULT STE. MARIE, Ont. – The Guelph Gryphons built a big enough lead in the first half to withstand a third quarter that saw them limited to eight points in a 79-70 victory over the Algoma Thunderbirds in OUA women’s basketball play Friday night at Algoma’s George Leach Centre.

The Gryphs led 20-17 at the end of the first quarter thanks to a 12-4 run in the middle stages of the quarter. Guelph used a 15-3 run in the second quarter to pull away to a 48-28 lead at halftime. However, thanks to a 17-6 run  in the third quarter the Thunderbirds managed to get the gap down to 56-49 by the end of the quarter.

Algoma got the gap down to a single point with just over five and a half minutes to go in regulation time, but the hosts never pulled even.

All five starters hit double figures for the Gryphs as Hanna Pryce had 15 points, Burke Bechard 14, Natalie Vigna and Skyla Minaker 12 apiece and Modupe Okeowo 10.

Bechard grabbed 11 rebounds and had two blocks while Minaker had six rebounds, five assists and seven steals.

Dionne Martin had a game-high 21 points for Algoma and Karly Fracalanza had 16, Karina Cole 14 and Rebecca Wylie 10. Fracalanza also hauled down eight rebounds while Cole had four assists and Wylie had three steals.

The win, Guelph’s second in nine outings in 2019, moves the Gryphs to 6-13, good for sixth in the West Division. Top six qualify for the playoffs. Algoma is ninth at 4-15 as the loss was the seventh in a row for the Thunderbirds.

The Gryphs and Algoma are to play again Saturday at 6 p.m. at the George Leach Centre.
