Gryphon basketball women nipped by Carleton

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons came up just a little short against the Carleton Ravens in OUA women’s basketball play Sunday at the Guelph Gryphons Athletics Complex.

The Gryphs took a pair of shots in the final two seconds, one a three-pointer and the other a desperation throw back by Guelph’s Julia Kokonis after she had hauled down the rebound on a missed three-pointer by Sarah Holmes.

That left seventh-ranked Carleton 67-65 victors over the unranked Gryphons.

The Gryphs gave Carleton a go throughout the match as the Ravens led 16-14 at the end of the first quarter and Guelph was ahead 31-28 at the intermission. Carleton surged ahead 52-46 by the end of the third quarter, but the Gryphs fought back and took the lead on a three-pointer by Modupe Okeowo with 54 seconds to go. Madison Reid hit three for Carleton to put the Ravens ahead 12 seconds later before Holmes sank a jumper 15 seconds after that to put Guelph ahead again. Ten seconds later Carleton regained the lead on a jumper by Nicole Gilmore before she made the difference two points by sinking a free throw with 10 seconds to play.

Holmes led the Gryphs with 14 points while Okeowo had 13 and Hanna Pryce and Kokonis each had 10.

Cynthia Dupont topped Carleton’s scoring list with 16 points while Gilmore had 15, Alyssa Cerino 14 and Reid 11.

With their third loss in a row, the Gryphs head into the exam and Christmas break with a 4-6 record, good for a tie for fourth in the West Division. Carleton is third in the East at 8-2.

The game concluded Guelph’s regular-season games against East Division opponents this season.

The Gryphs return to league play Jan. 4 and 5 to start their matches against West Division opponents by taking on the Lakehead Thunderwolves (9-1) at the GGAC with 6 p.m. games both nights.
