Gryphon curlers in hunt for OUA medals, national tourney berths

GUELPH – Both Guelph Gryphons teams in the OUA curling championship tournament at the Guelph Curling Club are to play for medals and a berth in the U Sports championship tournament Monday at the Guelph Curling Club.

Both the Gryphon men’s and women’s teams scored victories in Sunday’s quarter-finals to move on to the fifth and final day of the OUA tournament. The medal winners in both the men’s and women’s categories advance to the U Sports tournament at Portage la Prairie, Man., March 11 to 15.

Both the Gryphon men and women finished their round-robin pool play with 3-4 records and tied with two other teams for the final quarter-final berth in their pool. However, both moved on with better last stone draw scores and both would face the top-ranked team in the other division of their gender category.

The women faced the Waterloo Warriors (6-1) in a see-saw quarter-final match. Waterloo led 2-1 after four ends, but Guelph shot ahead with two in the fifth and a steal of one in the sixth. The Warriors pulled even with one in the seventh and one in the eighth to send the match into an extra end. The Gryphs scored one in the ninth to gain its berth in the semifinals.

In the men’s quarter-final, the Gryphs recovered from allowing four to the McMaster Marauders (6-1) in the third end that gave McMaster a 5-2 lead at the time. The Marauders led 6-4 after the fifth before the Gryphs started their winning comeback. The local squad scored two in the sixth to tie it, another two in the seventh to shoot ahead and one more in the eighth to complete the scoring with Guelph winning 9-6.

Monday’s semifinals are slated to begin at 9:30 a.m.

The Gryphs are to face the Laurier Golden Hawks (6-1) in one men’s semifinal while the Toronto Varsity Blues (5-2) and Brock Badgers (4-3) are to meet in the other one.

The women’s semifinals pit the Gryphs against the Queen’s Gaels (6-1) in one and the McMaster Marauders (7-0) and Laurier Golden Hawks (5-2) in the other.

All eight teams are to play again at 2 p.m. in the medal games. Semifinal winners clinch berths in the U Sports tournament are they’re to meet in the OUA gold-medal games while the morning’s losers are to battle in the bronze-medal matches. Bronze medalists also gain berths in the national tournament.
