Gryphon curling men in second division of U Sports tourney

PORTAGE LA PRAIRIE, Man. — The men’s category of the U Sports curling championships have divided themselves into two divisions through its first three draws.

There are four teams at 3-0 and the other four are at 0-3.

The Guelph Gryphons fall into the winless category along with the Brock Badgers, Memorial Sea-Hawks and Brandon Bobcats.

The undefeated squads are the Laurier Golden Hawks, Dalhousie Tigers, Regina Cougars and Alberta Golden Bears.

The Gryphs were doubled 10-5 by Laurier in their opening draw Wednesday. The Golden Hawks held a slim 5-4 lead after six ends, but pulled away with two in the seventh and three in the ninth. Guelph scored one in the eighth.

Thursday, the Gryphs were dumped 10-3 by Alberta in a match that ended early after the Golden Bears scored four in the eighth end. Alberta had led 5-0 after the third end.

The Gryphs also started slowly in a 9-2 loss to Dalhousie as the Tigers led 4-0 after the third end and 7-1 after the fifth.

Guelph is to play Regina and Memorial Friday and wrap up round-robin play with matches against Brandon and Brock Saturday.

Members of the Guelph squad are skip Dylan Niepage, vice Nathan Marshall, second Sam Guilbeault, lead Ryan Yee and coach Steve Szymanski.

Guelph didn’t qualify for the national tournament in the women’s category.

New Brunswick Varsity Reds, McMaster Marauders and Alberta Pandas are each at 3-0 after the division’s first three draws. They’re followed by the Queen’s Gaels, Laurier Golden Hawks and Dalhousie Tigers each at 1-2 and Regina Cougars and Brandon Bobcats both at 0-3.
