Gryphon field hockey women clout Marauders

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons scored at least one goal in each quarter as they dropped the McMaster Marauders 9-0 to remain unbeaten in OUA women’s field hockey play Sunday at Varsity Field.

The Gryphs led 2-0 at the end of the first quarter, 5-0 at halftime and 6-0 after the third quarter.

Sidney Evans, Braelyn Dennis and substitute Samantha Baine scored twice each while single goals were netted by Keaghan Keracher, Elly Peters and Harper Griffin. Evans, Keracher, Peters and Griffin each had an assist.

Nicola Leech had a single save in the game to get the shutout win in net for Guelph.

McMaster goalkeeper Olivia Renaud had 11 saves.

The Gryphs outshot McMaster 26-1 including a 20-1 advantage in shots on net.

The locals also took 18 penalty corners while the Marauders had two.

The Gryphs lead the OUA West at 4-0-2 while the Waterloo Warriors are at 2-2-2, Western Mustangs are at 1-2-3 and McMaster’s at 1-4-1.

York Lions lead the OUA East at 5-1-1 and are followed by the Toronto Varsity Blues at 3-0-1, Queen’s Gaels at 1-3-0 and McGill Redbirds at 0-5-0.

The Gryphs are scheduled to play Waterloo twice this week. They’re to host the Warriors Thursday at 7 p.m. at Varsity Field and play the Warriors in Waterloo Friday at 7 p.m.
