Gryphon field hockey women clout McGill and Queen’s
KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons struck for a pair of wins in OUA women’s field hockey play Saturday at Queen’s University as they blanked the McGill Martlets 12-0 and the host Gaels 6-0.
After a scoreless first quarter with McGill, the Gryphs gained control with four goals in the second quarter.
Katherine MacMillan led the scoring with four goals while Alexa Corrado had a hat trick. Braelyn Dennis and Bailey Mitchell scored twice each and Kayla Magarelli added the other goal.
Maryam Maamoun was credited with both shutouts.
Katherine MacMillan scored five minutes into the match against Queen’s. That would be the lone goal of the opening quarter, but the Gryphs would add two more in the second quarter and three more in the third quarter.
Corrado finished with a pair of goals while MacMillan, Dennis, Magarelli and Aidan Pattison also scored.
MacMillan’s goals give her a league-best nine after three games.
The Gryphs and Toronto Varsity Blues are tied for the league lead with 3-0 records while the two-time defending champion York Lions are third with a win in their only outing.
The Gryphs are to play York at Queen’s Sunday at 10:45 a.m.
