Gryphon field hockey women dump Queen’s
TORONTO – The Guelph Gryphons moved into a tie for second place in the OUA women’s field hockey league standings as they clouted the Queen’s Gaels 9-1 Sunday at the University of Toronto’s Back Campus Fields.
The Gryphs struck for five goals in the third quarter to break open a close game.
The teams scored once apiece in the first quarter with Queen’s getting the first one two minutes into the match. Guelph netted the lone goal of the second quarter and took control with four goals in a span of five minutes early in the third quarter.
Guelph’s scoring included four in a row by Alexa Corrado. Sidney Evans added a pair of goals while Kayla Magarelli, Katherine MacMillan and Mackenzie Janzen also scored.
Ella King had the lone goal for Queen’s.
The result leaves the Gryphs at 6-1-1, the same as the York Lions. The Toronto Varsity Blues lead at 7-0-2 while Waterloo Warriors are fourth at 2-4-1, Queen’s fifth at 2-5-0, Western Mustangs sixth at 1-6-1 and McGill Martlets seventh at 0-7-0.
The Gryphs are to host league play Saturday and are to play Waterloo at 9 a.m. and York at 2:15 p.m. Western and Toronto will also be here for games at Varsity Field.
