Gryphon field hockey women finish atop loop
WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons claimed a first-place finish at the conclusion of the OUA field hockey league’s regular season with a pair of victories Saturday in league play at Waterloo’s Warrior Field.
The Gryphs defeated the McGill Martlets 4-0 and edged the Toronto Varsity Blues 1-0 in the match that decided top spot as the loss was Toronto’s first of the season.
Guelph finished the regular season at 10-1-1 while Toronto was second at 9-1-2 and the defending champion York Lions third at 8-2-2. They’re followed by the Queen’s Gaels at 5-7-0, Waterloo Warriors at 4-6-2, Western Mustangs at 2-9-1 and McGill at 0-12-0.
Bailey Mitchell scored three consecutive goals against McGill while Katherine MacMillan had the other goal. Maryam Maamoun picked up the shutout.
Sidney Evans scored the lone goal of the game with Toronto as she fired home the winner two minutes into the final quarter.
Amanda Hodgert picked up the win in net for the Gryphs while Elizabeth O’Hara was tagged with the loss in the Toronto net.
It’s Guelph’s first first-place finish since 2015 when they tied the Varsity Blues for first place.
The Gryphs are to host the OUA championship tournament next weekend at Varsity Field. Play is to start Friday at 9 a.m. Medal and final placing games are scheduled for Sunday. The gold-medal game is slated for 3 p.m.
