Gryphon field hockey women into semifinals

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons advanced to Saturday’s semifinals in the OUA women’s field hockey championship tournament with a 3-0 win over the Western Mustangs Friday at Warrior Field.

The Gryphs struck for the eventual game-winner in the second minute of the contest as they scored two of their goals in the first half.

Kayla Magarelli, Danielle Crumpton and Rudi Ballard scored the goals for Guelph.

Amanda Hodgert picked up the shutout for the Gryphs while Quinn Kennedy was in net for Western.

In other quarter-final matches Friday, the York Lions destroyed the McMaster Marauders 16-0, Toronto Varsity Blues blanked the McGill Martlets 4-0 and Waterloo Warriors edged Queen’s Gaels 1-0.

The Gryphs are to play Toronto Saturday at 11 a.m. in the semifinals after York and Waterloo battle at 9 a.m.

Guelph had finished third in the standings at 7-3-2 and trailed only York (10-0-2) and Toronto (10-1-1).

The Varsity Blues scored a pair of one-goal victories over the Gryphs during the regular season as Toronto prevailed 1-0 on Guelph’s Varsity Field Sept. 23 and 2-1 on their own Back Campus Fields last weekend.

The gold-medal match is set for Sunday at 3 p.m.
