
Gryphon field hockey women knot league newcomers
HAMILTON – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA women’s field hockey season with a scoreless tie with the McMaster Marauders at McMaster’s Alumni Field Friday night.
The Gryphs are the reigning league champions, a title they earned with a 1-0 win over the Toronto Varsity Blues in the gold-medal match on their own Varsity Field Oct. 27, 2019. There were no university sports in the 2020-2021 school year.

For the Gryphs Friday’s game was also their first game since dropping the U Sports national championship series to the Victoria Vikes in Victoria, B.C., Nov. 2, 2019.
For the Marauders, the game marked their debut in the league as a varsity squad. They have fielded a club team for years and lost 8-0 to the Gryphs in the opening round of the 2019 playoffs.
The Gryphs and Marauders are to meet again Tuesday at Guelph’s Varsity Field. Game time is 8 p.m.
