Gryphon field hockey women nipped by Lions in semifinal

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons saw their OUA women’s field hockey season come to an end Saturday when they were edged 1-0 by the York Lions in semifinal play at Varsity Field.

Lexi Hannah scored the game’s only goal with about two and a half minutes to go in the first half.

The Lions outshot the Gryphs 8-5 overall and 4-1 on shots on net.

The Gryphs had four penalty corners in the game, one more than York.

The teams were also assessed 19 fouls apiece.

Serena Vilde had the shutout for York while Nicola Leech was in the Gryphon net.

The Gryphs had finished first in the OUA West at 7-0-3 while York was second in the OUA East at 7-2-1.

Toronto Varsity Blues (first in OUA East at 8-0-2) dumped the Western Mustangs (second in OUA West at 3-3-4) 5-0 in the other semifinal.

The Varsity Blues are to host York in the championship game next Saturday at 1 p.m.
