Gryphon field hockey women secure win over Waterloo

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons connected for a goal in the 59th minute to edge the Waterloo Warriors 2-1 in OUA women’s field hockey play Thursday night at Varsity Field.

The goal came about eight minutes after Waterloo had tied the score.

The Gryphs had opened the scoring with the lone goal of the first quarter while the second and third quarters were scoreless.

Sidney Evans and Abigail Warriner with the winner collected the goals for Guelph.

Meagan Hobson scored for Waterloo.

The Gryphs outshot the Warriors 9-7 overall and 7-6 on shots on net.

Waterloo took 13 of the game’s 15 penalty corners and the Gryphs were called for 31 of the games 50 fouls including 24 of 34 called in the second half.

Maryam Maamoun had five saves for the win in the Gryphon net while Marley Dowling had five saves for Waterloo.

Guelph and Waterloo hold down the top two spots in the OUA West. The Gryphs lead at 5-0-2 and Waterloo is second at 2-3-2.

The Gryphs and Warriors are to play again Friday at Waterloo. Game time is 7 p.m.
