Gryphon field hockey women to play for gold
WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons will play for gold Sunday at the OUA women’s field hockey championship tournament at Warrior Field.
The Gryphs edged the Toronto Varsity Blues 2-1 in penalty strokes in Saturday’s semifinals.
The teams had scored a goal apiece in the first half of regulation time. Kendra Puttick scored in the 12th minute for Guelph while Rachel Spouge replied for Toronto 16 minutes later.
The Gryphs outscored Toronto 3-2 in penalty strokes.
The teams had met twice during the regular season and Toronto prevailed both times as the Blues won 1-0 at Varsity Field Sept. 23 and 2-1 at Toronto’s Back Campus Fields last Sunday.
The Gryphs are to play the York Lions in Sunday’s gold-medal match.
In the regular season, the Gryphs and York tied 1-1 at York’s Alumni Field Sept. 16 and the Lions won 2-0 at Queen’s Sept. 29.
York had finished the regular season in first place at 10-0-2 while Toronto was second at 10-1-1 and the Gryphons third at 7-3-2.
Sunday’s final is to start at 3 p.m.
The winner will host the best-of-three U Sports national championship series against the Canada West champion UBC Thunderbirds.
