Gryphon football men move on to West Division final
WATERLOO – Quarterback Shawn Lal threw three touchdown passes, two in the final five minutes of the game, as the Guelph Gryphons moved on to OUA football’s West Division final after defeating the Laurier Golden Hawks 31-18 at University Stadium Saturday.
Lal connected on an 18-yard TD toss to Keegan Dicks midway through the first quarter to open the scoring and then hit Clark Barnes on a 43-yard scoring play with 4:35 to go. About two and a half minutes later, Dicks caught another TD pass from Lal, this one covering 27 yards.

The Gryphs never trailed in the game as they led 14-0 at the end of the first quarter, 17-9 at halftime and 17-12 at the end of the third quarter.
Richard Monaghan scored the other TD for the Gryphs when he recovered a fumble in the endzone in the first quarter.
Eric Stranz kicked a 27-yard field goal in the opening minute of the second quarter and also kicked four converts.
Quentin Scott had touchdown runs of 15 and two yards while Dawson Hodge kicked a 14-yard field goal and a single and Connor Carusello caught a five-yard pass for a two-point convert.
The Gryphs had 355 yards of total offence including 261 yards passing. They also took 12 penalties for 126 yards.
Laurier had 318 total yards with 164 coming on rushes. The Golden Hawks were tagged with seven penalties for 75 yards.
Lal completed 20 of 24 pass attempts, wasn’t intercepted, but was sacked once. Kiondre SDmith caught seven passes for 58 yards while Barnes caught five for 90 yards and Dicks caught four for 79 yards. Kwame Osei had 22 carries for 74 yards.
Devynn Cromwell had seven and a half tackles for the Gryphs while Jared Beeksma, Jeremy Kapelanski and Deshawn Wright each had a sack. Cole Wilkinson forced a fumble and Anthony Moretuzzo had an interception and returned it 17 yards.
Barnes had four punt returns for 41 yards and two kickoff returns for 20 yards. Smith had three punt returns for 33 yards and Jakob Tomas had two for 44 yards.
With the win the Gryphs move on to face the Western Mustangs in the West Division final next Saturday at Western. Game time is 1 p.m.
The Mustangs got in the division final by destroying the Waterloo Warriors 51-24 Saturday.
The East Division next Saturday will pit the Ottawa Gee-Gees against the Queen’s Gaels at Kingston. In the division semifinals, Ottawa defeated the Toronto Varsity Blues 27-17 and Queen’s dropped the Carleton Ravens 41-14.
Division champions are to meet in the Yates Cup league championship match Nov. 20.
