Gryphon hockey men again nipped in a shootout

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons must be getting to the point where they’ll try to avoid getting to a shootout in OUA men’s hockey play at all costs.

The Gryphs have been in three shootouts this season and they’ve lost all three. They haven’t won a shootout since Nov. 13, 2015, when they edged the York Lions 4-3 at York’s Canlan Ice Centre.

It was York that prevailed in a shootout Thursday at the Gryphon Centre as the Lions nipped the Gryphs 4-3.

The hosts again struggled putting the puck in the opposition’s net during regulation time. They had a few glorious opportunities that went for naught.

The teams scored once apiece in the first period and York grabbed the lead with a pair of goals 1:47 apart midway through the second.

The Gryphs were all over the Lions in the third period and finally broke through with two identical-looking goals 10 seconds apart in the final four minutes of regulation time that took the match to a five-minute, three-on-three overtime period.

When that extra period didn’t produce a winner, the game went to the shootout and it was Josh LaFrance, York’s second of three shooters, who netted the only goal of the shootout.

Cody Thompson, Scott Simmonds and Ryan Valentini scored the goals for Guelph while Todd Winder and Nick Boyer each had two assists and Simmonds and Marc Stevens had one each.

Scott Feser, Reid Jackman and Ben Verrall scored in regulation time for York. Assists went to Justin Bean, Daniel Nikandrov, Feser, Justin Maiolino and Morgan Messenger.

The Gryphs outshot York 49-40 and both teams were scoreless on their power plays, the Gryphs have four and the Lions having three.

Andrew Masters made 36 saves in the Guelph net and Mack Shields made 46 for York.

The Gryphs (7-9-3-3) are tied for seventh in the West Division with the Waterloo Warriors (6-10-5-5) while York is third at 11-6-2-2.

Next up for the Gryphs is a Saturday match against Toronto Varsity Blues (5-10-4-4) at Varsity Arena. Game time is 7 p.m.
