Gryphon hockey men blank Bold to move to tie for eighth

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons snapped a three-game losing streak Friday night with a 2-0 victory over the Toronto Metropolitan Bold in OUA men’s hockey play at the Gryphon Centre.

The Gryphs scored in the final minutes of the first and third periods for the win.

Colton Incze had 36 saves to get the shutout in his third appearance in league play this season for the Gryphs and his first since 4:18 in relief in the third period of a 5-4 loss to the Toronto Varsity Blues at Toronto Nov. 12.

Ted Nichol with a power-play goal with 32 seconds to go in the first period and Zachary Poirier into an empty net with 18 seconds to go in the third scored for the hosts Friday.

Poirier, Nathan Allensen and Tristan De Jong each had an assist.

The Gryphs had 42 shots in the game and went 1-for-4 on their power play while the Bold was scoreless on four power plays.

Guelph is at 7-10-7-0 and is tied with the Western Mustangs (8-10-5-0) for the eighth and final playoff position in the West Division. The Gryphs and Mustangs are also two points out of sixth and five out of fifth.

Friday’s game was also the first of three consecutive home games for the Gryphs who also have three games left on their regular-season schedule. They’re to host the York Lions (11-12-1-0) Saturday at 7:30 p.m. and the Brock Badgers (17-7-0-0) in their combined Aggies Night and Senior Night game.

The Gryphs are to wrap up their regular season Feb. 11 with a game against the Lions at York. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
