Gryphon hockey men come back for another win

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons struck for three goals in the final 11 minutes of the game to claim a 5-3 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA men’s hockey play Saturday at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

With four games to go in their regular season, the Gryphs are assured of having home-ice advantage in the West Division quarter-finals as they can finish no lower than third. While they can finish tied with the Brock Badgers and Laurier for third, the Gryphs will win the tie-breakers as they won three of four games against the Badgers this season and won both games against the Golden Hawks.

A power-play goal by the hosts in the third minute of the third period put them ahead 3-2, a lead that lasted about six and a half minutes before Cody Thompson tallied to pull the Gryphs even.

Thompson scored again with 1:20 to go in regulation time, this goal standing up as the winner, before Michael Stevens potted an empty-netter with 37 seconds to play on an unassisted effort.

Mathieu Henderson and Todd Winder had staked the Gryphs to a 2-0 lead in the first period. Mark Raycroft had three assists in the game while Scott Simmonds had two and Seth Swenson, J.P. Villeneuve and Josh McFadden had one apiece.

Anthony Sorrentino, Braydon Blight and Erik Pushka scored the goals for Laurier. Brandon Robinson, Jeremy Pullara, Anthony Conti, Alex Adams, Christian Mroczkowski and Neil Aird collected one assist each for Laurier.

The Gryphs outshot Laurier 31-27, but were scoreless on five power plays while Laurier scored twice on its five power plays.

Andrew Masters claimed the win in net for Guelph while Chris Festarini was charged with the loss in Laurier’s net.

Guelph leads the West at 18-5-1 while Laurier (13-8-3) and Brock (12-7-5) are tied for fourth.

The Gryphs have two games against the second-place York Lions (16-8-1) and two against the third-place Ryerson Rams (14-7-3) remaining before the playoffs. They’re to play at York Friday at 7 p.m., host Ryerson Saturday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre, host York Feb. 8 at 7:30 p.m. and play Ryerson at the Mattamy Athletic Centre Feb. 9 at 7:15 p.m.
