Gryphon hockey men downed by Lakehead

GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons yielded three goals in less than two and a half minutes in the second period as they were downed 7-3 by the Lakehead Thunderwolves in OUA men’s hockey play Thursday night at the Gryphon Centre.

Those three quick goals, two on the power play for Lakehead, gave the visitors a lead that they extended to 6-0 with a shorthanded goal with 1:25 to go in the second period.

Lakehead had led 2-0 at the end of the first period.

The Gryphs cut the lead in half with three goals in 4:14, the third of those goals being a power-play marker with 4:30 to go. However, Lakehead added an empty-netter to wrap up the scoring.

The loss was the first in regulation time for the Gryphs this season.

Luke Bignell scored twice for the Gryphs while Nolan DeGurse had the other goal. Assists went to Jaxon Camp, Cameron Searles, Jacob Winterton and Ted McGeen.

Lakehead received goals from seven players – Griffen Fox, Keighan Gerrie, Joe Mack, Kevin Stiles, Colin Van Den Hurk, Spencer Blackwell and Ben Badalamenti. Tyler Ho had two assists while Olivier Pouliot, Josh Van Unen, Badalamenti, Blackwell, Stiles and Kyle Auger had one apiece.

The Gryphs outshot Lakehead 39-24. The Thunderwolves went 2-for-4 on their power play while the Gryphs went 1-for-5. Lakehead also had a shorthanded goal.

Colton Incze took the loss in net for the Gryphs. Brendan Cregan started and yielded three goals in his 30:49 of game time while Incze gave up three the rest of the way. The Thunderwolves’ seventh goal was the empty-netter.

Christian Cicigoi had 36 saves for Lakehead.

The Gryphs are sixth in the West Division at 2-1-1-0 while Lakehead leads at 4-1-0-1.

Next up for the Gryphs is a pair of games at the Gryphon Centre against the Windsor Lancers (4-1-0-0) on back-to-back nights as they’re to play Nov. 4 and 5. Game time is 7:30 p.m. both days.
