Gryphon hockey men drop another one in overtime
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons have got to be starting to dread going to overtime in OUA men’s hockey league play.
The Gryphs lost in overtime for the third time this season as they suffered a 4-3 loss to the Brock Badgers in extra time Saturday night at the Gryphon Centre.
Christian Girhiny’s goal at 1:36 of OT was the winner for the Badgers.
The Gryphs held the early lead with the lone goal of the first period, but never led after Brock tied it with a power-play goal in the second, the lone goal of that period. The teams traded goals in the third with a power-play marker with 5:39 to go by Guelph’s Ted Nichol, his second goal of the period, creating the tie that sent the game to OT.
Matt Kenney scored the first-period goal for the Gryphs while Matt Timms, Cole Cameron, Justin Lemcke, Todd Winder, Ryan Valentini and Zach Poirier each had one assist.
Jared Marino scored the two third-period goals for Brock while Tyler Rollo tallied in the second period. Single assists were awarded to Ethan Spaxman, Jordan Sambrook, Connor Walters, Ryan Burton, Brayden Stortz, Cole Thiessen, Cosimo Fontana and Skylar Pacheco.
The Gryphs outshot the Badgers 36-35 and went 1-for-5 on their power play while Brock went 1-for-6.
The game was the typical Guelph-Brock match in that it featured 53 minutes in penalties. Of that total, 37 were assessed to the Badgers, but that included 20 minutes in misconducts – 10 for a cross-checking game misconduct to Spaxman midway through the second and a 10-minute misconduct to Ayden MacDonald early in the third.
Andrew Masters took the loss in net for the Gryphs. He had 31 saves while winning goaltender Mario Cavaliere had 33 for Brock.
Guelph (5-3-3-0) is fifth in the West Division while Brock (7-3-1-0) and the Ryerson Rams (7-2-1-1) are tied for third.
The Gryphs and Badgers are very familiar with one another as they met twice in the preseason and they’re to play again Friday at the Seymour-Hannah Complex in St. Catharines. Game time is 7:15 p.m.
