Gryphon hockey men dropped by Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. – The Guelph Gryphons scored first but their lead was short-lived as they were downed 6-1 by the NCAA’s Vermont Catamounts in university men’s exhibition hockey play Saturday.

Mikkel Aagard gave the Gryphs the lead at 5:49 of the opening period. Ted Nichol assisted on the goal.

However, Vermont connected on a pair of power plays to lead 2-1 at the end of the first period and the Catamounts stretched their advantage to 4-1 by the end of the second.

Vermont had three power-play goals and two shorthanded markers in the match.

The Catamounts received goals from Joey Cipollone, Jacques Bouquot, Alex Esposito, Cory Thomas, Bryce Misley and Matt Alvaro. Esposito, Matt O’Donnell and Cipollone each had two assists while Corey Moriarty, Bouquot, Misley and Andrew Lucas had one apiece.

The Gryphs were outshot 43-33 and were scoreless on seven power plays while Vermont was 3-for-7 on its power play.

Brendan Cregan had 37 saves in the Guelph net while Stefanos Lekkas, Tyler Harmon and Matt Beck combined for 32 saves in the Vermont net.

The Gryphs are to play the New Hampshire Wildcats in another exhibition game against an NCAA opponent Sunday at 4 p.m. at Durham, NH.
