Gryphon hockey men edge Laurier to start preseason

PORT DOVER – The Guelph Gryphons opened their OUA men’s hockey preseason with a 4-3 victory over the Laurier Golden Hawks Wednesday night at the Port Dover arena.

Todd Winder, the West Division rookie of the year last season, led the Gryphs with a hat trick while Mark Raycroft scored the other goal. Scott Simmonds assisted on two of the goals while single assists were awarded to Connor Bramwell and Zach McFadden.

Andrew Masters made 20 saves in the Gryphon net for the win.

While the game was Guelph’s first of the preseason, it was the second for the Golden Hawks who lost 3-1 to the Western Mustangs last week at London.

Next preseason outing for the Gryphs is their annual Steel Blade Classic game with the Brock Badgers Friday night at the Meridian Centre in St. Catharines.
