Gryphon hockey men edged at home again
GUELPH – The Guelph Gryphons suffered their fourth consecutive loss, all at the Gryphon Centre, as they were edged 4-3 by the Brock Badgers in OUA men’s hockey play Saturday.
The Badgers scored three consecutive goals – two in the second period and one in the third – for the victory.
The Gryphs led 2-1 at the end of the first period, but trailed 3-2 after the second. Brock extended its lead with a power-play goal in the third before the Gryphs wrapped up the game’s scoring with 1:11 to go.
Reilly O’Connor scored twice for Guelph while Stephen Hiff had the other goal. Matt Kenney collected two assists and Michael Stevens, Seth Swenson and Todd Winder had one apiece.
Scoring for Brock with a goal apiece were Adam Berg, Jared Marino, Ayden MacDonald and Ethan Spaxman. Ryan Burton had two assists and MacDonald, Brandon O’Quinn, Ethan Price and Justin Brack had one each.
The Gryphs outshot Brock 39-26 and Brock’s third-period power-play goal was the only power-play goal of the game. The Gryphs had four power plays and Brock had five.
Andrew Masters was tagged with the loss in net for the Gryphs while Logan Thompson had the win for Brock.
The Gryphs are eighth in the West Division at 2-5-2-2 while Brock is third at 6-3-0-0.
After the four-game homestand, the Gryphs head out on the road for a pair of games, both at Waterloo. They’re to battle the Laurier Golden Hawks (2-7-0-0) at the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex Thursday at 7:07 p.m. and the Waterloo Warriors (2-6-2-2) at the Columbia Ice Fields arena Saturday at 7 p.m.
