Gryphon hockey men edged by Western Mustangs
LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons yielded a pair of goals in the first two and a half minutes of the game as they were edged 5-4 by the Western Mustangs in OUA men’s hockey league play Thursday night at London’s Budweiser Gardens.
The Gryphs did manage to battle back and tie the score, but two consecutive goals by the Mustangs in the third period put the hosts ahead for good.
Western led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 3-2 after the second.
Ted Nichol had a pair of goals for the Gryphs while Jesse Saban and Matt Timms added single goals. Mikkel Aagaard assisted on three of the goals while single assists were awarded to Timms, Cole Cameron, Connor Bramwell, Todd Winder and Zach McFadden.
Western’s goals were scored by Matt Watson, Kyle Pettit, Reed Morison, Stephen Desrocher and Kyle Langdon. Franco Sproviero, Morison, Austin Osmanski, Zach Core, Kenny Huether, Rylan Bechtel and Pettit each had an assist.
The Gryphs outshot Windsor 46-31 and went 1-for-3 on their power play while the Mustangs went 1-for-2.
Andrew Masters took the loss in goal for Guelph. He had 26 saves while winning netminder Luke Peresinni of Western had 42 saves.
The result leaves the Gryphs at 15-6-4-1 and Western at 11-10-4-0.
The Gryphs are to host the Windsor Lancers (14-8-0-2) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre.
