
Gryphon hockey men end losing streak with shootout win
WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons put an end to their six-game losing streak in OUA men’s hockey play Friday night with a 3-2 victory in a shootout over the Waterloo Warriors at the Columbia Ice Fields arena.
Guelph’s previous win was also by a 3-2 score over the Warriors in the Gryphs’ home opener Oct. 15.

Jacob Winterton’s goal in the shootout gave the Gryphs the win. He scored on a backhander after appearing to lose control of the puck as he closed in on the net.
Winterton was the only one of the six shooters in the shootout to score.
After a scoreless first period, the teams scored once apiece in both the second and third periods.
Waterloo opened and closed the regulation-time scoring with power-play goals by Dan Walker.
Luke Kutkevicius scored for the Gryphs four minutes after Waterloo’s first goal.
Winterton put the Gryphs ahead midway through the third period, but the Warriors tied it with 3:13 to go in the period.
Liam Ham assisted on both Guelph goals while Ted McGeen and Kutkevicius each had one assist.
Connor Love and Andrew Cordssen-David assisted on both Waterloo goals.
The Gryphs outshot Waterloo 30-29 despite being outshot 16-4 in the first period. And they had five power plays in the opening period. Guelph was scoreless on seven power plays in the game while Waterloo went 2-for-9.
Guelph (3-3-3-0) and Waterloo (4-6-0-1) are among four teams tied for seventh in the West Division with nine points apiece. The others are the York Lions and Laurier Golden Hawks, both at 4-6-1-0.
The Gryphs are to host the Western Mustangs Saturday at the Gryphon Centre. The Mustangs are sixth in the division at 3-4-4-0. Game time is 7:30 p.m.
