Gryphon hockey men fade in OT loss to Laurier

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons squandered a three-goal lead with six minutes to go in the third period as they were edged 5-4 in overtime by the Laurier Golden Hawks in OUA men’s hockey play Saturday at the Sun Life Financial Arena in the Waterloo Memorial Recreation Complex.

The Golden Hawks scored three times in the final 5:36 of the third period. They included a pair of goals by Grayden Gottschalk 2:16 apart, one a shorthanded goal and the other a power-play goal. The power-play marker tied the score with 41 seconds to go.

Chayse Herrfort scored the winner at 6:01 of overtime.

The Gryphs led 2-1 at the end of the first period and 3-1 after the second before Emmett Gordon extended the lead midway through the third.

Nolan DeGurse, Nathan Allensen, Anthony Tabak and Emmett Gordon scored the goals for the Gryphs. Assists went to Luke Bignell, Giordano Biondi, Luke Kutkevicius and Tristan De Jong.

Nick Giunta scored in the first period for Laurier.

Steven MacLean assisted on two goals for Laurier while single assists went to Matt McJannet, Sullivan Sparkes, James Thomson, Patrick Brown and Adrian Nabuurs.

The Gryphs outshot the Golden Hawks 50-44. Laurier went 1-for-2 on its power play while the Gryphs were scoreless on three power plays.

Tanner Wickware had 39 saves for the Gryphs while former Guelph junior B goalie Christian Propp had 46 saves for Laurier.

The result leaves the Gryphs eighth in the West Division at 4-4-4-0 and Laurier sixth at 7-6-1-0.

The Gryphs are to finish the 2022 portion of their season with three games in three days as their to host the Brock Badgers (8-4-0-0) Friday at 7:30 p.m. at the Gryphon Centre, play the Waterloo Warriors (4-9-0-1) at Waterloo’s Columbia Ice Field arena Saturday at 7 p.m. and play the Badgers at Brock’s Canada Games arena Sunday at 2 p.m.
