Gryphon hockey men finish as OUA silver medalists

KINGSTON – The Guelph Gryphons yielded three goals in the third period as they suffered a 4-1 loss to the Queen’s Gaels in the OUA men’s hockey league’s Queen’s Cup championship match Saturday night at the Kingston Memorial Centre.

The Queen’s Cup title win was the first since 1981 for Queen’s.

After a scoreless first period, the teams tallied once each in the second.

The Gaels shot ahead for good at 4:42 of the third and added an insurance goal three minutes later and an empty-netter with 55 seconds to play.

Marc Stevens scored for the Gryphs with 25 seconds to go in the second. Reilly O’Connor set up that goal.

Jaden Lindo scored twice for Queen’s while Henry Thompson and Liam Dunda also scored. Assists were awarded to Spencer Abraham, Slater Doggett, Luke Edwards, Jared Bethune and Graeme Brown.

The Gryphs outshot Queen’s 32-26, but were scoreless on their two power plays while the Gaels went 1-for-4.

Justin Fazio collected the win in net for Queen’s while Andrew Masters was tagged with the loss in the Guelph net.

Both teams advance to next week’s U Sports Cavendish University Cup national championship tournament where they’ll be joined by the Canada West champion Alberta Golden Bears, Atlantic champion New Brunswick Varsity Reds, Canada West finalist Saskatchewan Huskies, Atlantic finalist St. Francis Xavier X-Men, OUA bronze medalist Carleton Ravens and host Lethbridge Pronghorns.

The national tournament at Lethbridge has quarter-finals Thursday and Friday, semifinals Saturday and medal games March 17.

Teams that lose in the quarter-finals are eliminated. Semifinal winners are to meet in the gold-medal game March 17 at 7 p.m. while semifinal losers are to meet in the bronze-medal game March 17 at 3 p.m.

Seeding and quarter-final schedule are expected to be announced Sunday.
