Gryphon hockey men get back to winning ways

ST. CATHARINES – The Guelph Gryphons put an end to their two-game OUA men’s hockey losing streak Thursday night at the place that streak started a week earlier.

The Gryphons scored four times in the first period as they edged the Brock Badgers 4-3 at the Seymour-Hannah Centre.

A pair of goals five and a half minutes apart late in the first period by Ryan Valentini put the Gryphs ahead for good. The only goal after the first period was a tally by Brock in the first two and a half minutes of the second period.

Todd Winder and Luke Kutkevicius had the other goals for the Gryphs while assists were awarded to Jesse Saban, Valentini, Justin Lemcke, Connor Bramwell and Marc Stevens.

Brayden Stortz, Frank Pucci and Jordan Malletta had a goal apiece for Brock while assists went to Cole Thiessen, Ayden MacDonald, Mitchell Mendonca, Johnathon Schaefer, Ryan Burton and Skylar Pacheco.

Brock outshot the Gryphs 30-23, but the Badgers were scoreless on two power plays while Guelph scored on both of its power plays.

Brendan Cregan had 27 saves to get the win in the Gryphon net while Mario Culina had 19 saves for Brock.

The Gryphs are to play the Waterloo Warriors at Waterloo’s Columbia Ice Fields Friday at 7 p.m.
