Gryphon hockey men give up 3 in 2nd in loss to Colgate

HAMILTON, N.Y. – The Guelph Gryphons yielded three goals in the second period as they were handed a 5-1 setback by the Colgate Raiders in OUA men’s hockey preseason play Sunday at Colgate’s Class of 1965 Arena.

The teams were tied 1-1 at the end of the first period before Colgate shot ahead with three goals in the first eight minutes of the second.

Colgate had opened the scoring 29 seconds into the game, but Guelph pulled even three minutes later on an unassisted goal by Luke Kutkevicius.

Arnaud Vachon had two goals for Colgate while Sebastian Tamburro, Ethan Manderville and Colton Young also scored. Alex Young gathered two assists while Nick Anderson, Alex DiPaolo and Matt Verboon each had one.

Colgate outshot the Gryphs 45-30 and went 1-for-7 on its power play while the Gryphs were scoreless on four power plays.

Nate McDonald had 40 saves for the Gryphs while Carter Gylander and Andrew Takacs shared the goaltending chores. Gylander started and had 16 saves before giving way to Takacs who had 13 saves.

The Gryphs are to complete their preseason on the Thanksgiving weekend with a pair of games in Thunder Bay against the Lakehead Thunderwolves. They’re to play Friday at 7 p.m. and Saturday at 7 p.m.

The Gryphs are to open their regular season with a game against the Western Mustangs at the Thompson arena on the Western campus Oct. 14 before hosting the Waterloo Warriors in their home opener at the Gryphon Centre Oct. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

They also have three more road games against NCAA opponents as they’re to play the Cornell Big Red at Ithica, NY, Oct. 20, Dartmouth Big Green at Hanover, NH, Oct. 21 and Harvard Crimson at Cambridge, MA, Oct. 22.
