Gryphon hockey men halt losing skid

WATERLOO – The Guelph Gryphons used a pair of power-play goals to put an end to their five-game OUA men’s hockey league losing streak.

The Gryphons scored twice while enjoying a manpower advantage in the second period and added an empty-netter in the final minute of the game to defeat the Waterloo Warriors 3-1 Saturday night at the Columbia Ice Fields arena.

The first period was a scoreless affair and Waterloo had a power-play goal in the second sandwiched between Guelph’s two power-play goals.

Marc Stevens, Cody Thompson and Zach McFadden scored for the Gryphs while Todd Winder, Scott Simmonds, Marc Stevens and Matt Kenney each had one assist.

Mike Moffat had the goal for Waterloo while assists went to Andrew Cordssen-David and Nick Halagian.

Evan Cormier made 28 saves in the Guelph net for the win while Julian Sime took the loss despite 34 saves.

The Gryphs outshot the Warriors 37-29 and went 2-for-9 on their power play while Waterloo went 1-for-4.

Guelph moves to 3-6-2-2 with the win while the loss knocks Waterloo to 2-7-3-3.

The Gryphs are to host the Lakehead Thunderwolves (7-4-0-0) at the Gryphon Centre Thursday at 7:30 p.m.
