Gryphon hockey men hit in third to double Western

LONDON – The Guelph Gryphons erupted for three goals in the third period to double the Western Mustangs 4-2 in OUA men’s hockey play Friday night at Western’s Thompson Arena.

Western scored the lone goal of the first period and the teams scored once apiece in the second.

Ryan Valentini, Marc Stevens, Matt Kenney and Jesse Saban connected for a goal apiece for the Gryphs while Matt Timms, Zach McFadden, Gio Finoro, Mikkel Aagaard, Saban and Cole Cameron each had an assist.

Stephen Desrocher and Kolten Olynek scored for Western with Kyle Petit, Kenny Huether and Theo Lewis each picking up an assist.

The Gryphs outshot Western 40-34, but were scoreless on two power plays while Western went 1-for-4.

Brendan Cregan had 32 saves to get the win in the Guelph net while Luke Peresini took the loss in the Western net. He had 36 saves.

The Gryphs are fifth in the West Division at 8-4-3-0 while Western is ninth at 5-7-2-0.

The Guelph squad is to complete the 2019 portion of its schedule Saturday with a game against the Windsor Lancers (second in the West at 12-3-0-1) at Windsor’s Capri Ice Complex. Game time is 4 p.m.
